Characters who âjump off the page,â who are full and rounded and, at times, unpredictable in what they both say and do, make for a truly memorable reading experience. Thatâs what makes fans out of readers.
Donât Overtag Your Dialogue
When it comes to dialogue attributions, or âtags,â my advice is simple:
Use said or asked as defaults. They do their job and get out of the way.
As much as possible, make it clear from the dialogue itself, or an action beat, how someone is speaking. Then you wonât need any tag at all.
